Dear Colleague,
We are delighted to invite you to Magnethon 2025, the first educational-scientific marathon on
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. This unique, experimental Challenge will take place from November 17 to
19, 2025, during the NMR Week, in the beautiful region of Apulia, Italy.
By combining rigorous experimentation with vibrant international collaboration, Magnethon 2025
offers an unparalleled opportunity for participants to sharpen their skills, forge global
connections, and compete for an exceptional prize. Indeed, the winning team will take home an
advanced automated sample preparation system worth € 50.000!
This groundbreaking initiative, financed by the Polytechnic University of Bari under the ‘Patti
Territoriali’ program, was proposed by the “Divisione di Chimica per le Tecnologie” (DCT) and the
“Gruppo Interdivisionale di Risonanze Magnetiche” (GIRM) of the Italian Society of Chemistry, with
the goal of advancing research and collaboration in the field of NMR.
What to Expect from Magnethon
• Interlaboratory Comparison: Be part of a large-scale, peer-to-peer competition designed to refine
NMR methodologies and elevate collaborative problem-solving in real-world scenarios.
• Four Inspiring Sessions: Magnethon 2025 is divided into four 2.5-hour sessions, moderated by a
panel of internationally renowned scientists. These sessions will walk you through every step of
the analytical process, from sample preparation to the final evaluation of results.
• Interactive Format: Instead of formal presentations, participants can reserve 5-minute
intervention slots for questions, commentary, or short PowerPoint demonstrations, ensuring dynamic
and productive discussions. You can even access on-site laboratories or collaborate with your home
institution in real time to repeat measurements for greater accuracy.
• The Core Challenge: You’ll aim to determine the degree of substitution (DS) in
(2-Hydroxypropyl)-β- cyclodextrin by comparing specific NMR signals and quantifying concentrations
using internal standard, external standard, and artificial signals. The winning team will be the
one whose results most closely match consensus values, an achievement that earns you the €50,000
grand prize!
• Authorship in a Scientific Publication: Each team can designate one representative as a co-author
in the scientific publication summarizing Magnethon 2025’s findings. This tradition follows the
high- impact studies published from previous NMR interlaboratory comparisons. Below is the list of
the previously published articles, providing insight into the outcomes of past NMR laboratory
comparisons:

• second interlaboratory comparison/ 1 0 .1 00 7/s1 21 61- 0 19 -0 16 64 -8
• third interlaboratory comparison/ 1 0 .1 01 6/ j.talanta.2 02 0 .1 20 85 5
• fourth interlaboratory comparison (manuscript in preparation)
